This American idol was a staunch Methodist who never performed
on Sunday ...
Dan Patch was born with a bad leg and was nearly destroyed at birth.
His legs were so crooked that he required human assistance to stand up
and nurse. But he went on to become the greatest champion of his day.
Crazy Good is the story of America at a time when the
automobile was brand new and most people preferred horses. It's the story of an
era when horse racing (which meant trotters and pacers, not Thoroughbreds) was,
along with boxing and baseball, the dominant sport of the day.
Dan Patch became the greatest sports icon of his time. He endorsed cigars,
children's toys, watches, washing machines, gasoline engines, livestock feeds
and an automobile. He toured thousands of miles each year in his private railway
car, meeting fans at every stop.
Here is the story of a great horse and the cast of characters who surrounded
him. |
