Monty Roberts' personal training halter
Monty Roberts has designed this special training halter for use on all horses,
both young and remedial.
Monty calls this halter the Dually because a lead shank can be attached to
either the usual ring under the chin or to the training ring at the side of the
halter. The Dually is the perfect piece of equipment to train a horse of any age
to lead, load onto a trailer, pick up their feet, stand quietly, and stop
biting, among other bad habits. The proper use of the halter quickly and
humanely solves most behavior problems, many times in only a day or two.
The Dually is constructed like a conventional halter, except that a dual
strand of nylon cord fits over the nose, just below the noseband. The cord
fits through a ring on the left side of the halter which, in turn, has a ring
attached to the end of the cords. It is to this ring that the lead shank
is attached when using the halter for training purposes.
The principle of the Dually is similar to that of placing the chain end of a
lead rope over the nose, except the Dually is more effective and far more
humane. Why a dual strand of soft nylon cord is more humane is easy to
understand - the effectiveness of the Dually results from the free-flowing
movement of the cords. Unlike chains, the nylon cords don't
"hang-up" or get caught on the halter rings. The horse is immediately
rewarded by slackened pressure across the nose when it behaves in an appropriate
manner.
We use the Dually here on our farm and are impressed with the results on
fractious young horses - we're sure you'll say the same.
