Structure, Soundness, and Performance
When evaluating horses of any breed, conformation is your surest key
to success. A horse that isn't built correctly can rarely perform to the
standards you demand.
One of the best texts you'll find on conformation is this book (formerly
titled Conformation & Anatomy) by the editors of Equine Research. Its
nearly 500 pages are filled with excellent photos and drawings of
conformation points good and bad. You'll have in-depth text on every
internal and external equine body part affecting conformation, including
the bones, muscles and tendons you can't see with the naked eye.
Chapters also include information on breed structure, color and
markings, teeth and body systems. Illustrations abound for each topic,
and, best of all, it's done without the technical terminology you often
find in scientific-type books.
You'll want Horse Conformation for its thorough discussion on
conformation. It's so good you may even find yourself toting it along to
the sales.
