You know your horse is "off." You can see its head bob and
hear the uneven footfalls. But which leg is it?
This handy little chart done by noted illustrator Kip Carter shows the flow
of how to determine where the lameness is located. For example:
- Is the head down when the LH (left hind) or RH (right hind) foot hits the
ground?
- Is the head up when the LF or RF foot hits the ground?
- Is one hip lower than the other?
- Does it travel straight?
- Is its stride short?
Keep this chart in the barn for a quick reference when you need to know
what's going on with your horse. On the reverse side are the symptoms and
treatment for colic; another handy reference to have on hand.
