This is the first part of Al Dunning's series on western training and reining.
Reining Fundamentals and
Advanced Reining
Techniques complete the series.
This segment covers the basics of starting your
young colt or filly on the road to becoming a successful reining horse. He
demonstrates starting work such as learning to lunge, being driven in long
lines, accepting the saddle, bridle and rider in the safety of a round pen. Al
demonstrates the importance of taking time in the early steps of training. He
also discusses "Bitting Up" in reference to horses that resist giving
to the bit and are stiff during this initial training. Al Dunning's techniques
are well-proven and don't require any magic or secrets. This series is in-depth
and comprehensive. Although these techniques are specifically geared
toward the future reining horse, they are also applicable to anyone involved in
western disciplines who seek suppleness, athleticism and obedience in their
horse.
Al Dunning is a well-known professional trainer of performance champions. He
has won 20 World Championships and 8 Reserve Championships, as well as being
named the 1996 AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year. Many of his students have
gone on to win performance titles!
