Q11) What are some general safety tips for trailering?
-
Make sure your tow vehicle is compatible with your
trailer. This includes motor size, proper rear axle ratio, proper
brake systems and the correct hitch and ball sizes.
-
Check and re-check the hitch coupler, brake system, lights
and doors before leaving the driveway with your horse. It is a good
idea to drive a few miles then stop and check the trailer and hitch again.
-
Keep your trailer clean inside and out. Clean it
each time you use it. Urine and manure will get under the floor mats
and hasten the deterioration of the flooring.
-
Check the flooring and visually inspect the trailer for
damage and sharp edges.
-
Ensure that you have the proper ventilation for the
weather. Re-check ventilation during your trip - especially if the
weather changes.
-
Check on your horse often - each time you stop for fuel or
rest.
