Silks makers are found where their product is needed - at the racetrack. Some are located
on track grounds, others nearby. Many also offer their services online. There is
no regulation for silks makers, so it is wise to check with your trainer, owners
associations or other owners for recommendations.
Since there is no regulation, you or a family member could sew your own
silks. However, although they may look fine at home, once on a jockey and shown
with other professionally-made silks, they usually stick out like a sore thumb.
(And if the jockeys don't want to be seen in them, it is a waste of your time
There is a definite fit and shape - a man's shirt pattern is NOT that fit or
shape. Plus the appropriate fabric content may not be used, meaning the wear and
tear from the track kick-back and constant washing and drying can make them
short-lived. You probably spent a lot of money to get your horse to the track in
the first place. Don't let your silks be an embarrassment when he makes it to
the winner's circle!
